A strong online presence is no longer optional for contractors and home builders; it’s a must. Potential clients often make decisions based on what they see online before ever picking up the phone. The challenge is standing out in a competitive industry while turning website visitors into actual leads. That’s where contractor website services, home contractor website design, and home builder website design come in.

With the right plan, your website can help more people find you, bring in new leads, and build trust with future customers. In this post, we’ll go over SEO, design tips, site performance, and user experience so you can get the best results from your contractor website.

Why a Professional Contractor Website Matters

A good contractor website does more than list your services. It helps build trust, shows you’re credible, and makes your business a top choice for local homeowners. With the right design, a home builder’s website can bring in steady leads, improve user experience, and boost conversions. Working with a skilled marketing team makes sure your website becomes a tool for growth, not just an online flyer.

Core Elements of Home Contractor Website Design

Your website should leave a great first impression and guide visitors to take action. The best contractor websites combine good looks with easy-to-use features. It gives visitors a smooth experience and strong performance.

Key elements include:

  • Clean, easy-to-navigate layout
  • Clear display of floor plans and high-quality visuals
  • A strong call to action on each page
  • Mobile-friendly design with fast loading speeds
  • Professional web design tailored to your industry
  • Specialized builders’ website design for showcasing projects

Home Builder Website Design Best Practices

A professional home builder website design focuses on showing off your work and making it easy for clients to take the next step. It should balance visual appeal with practical tools to support home-building projects. Keeping the site simple, easy to navigate, and geared toward boosting conversion rates is key.

Showcase Completed Projects

Feature galleries of past builds, including floor plans, photos, and client testimonials. This will demonstrate expertise.

Highlight Interactive Features

Use tools like design visualizers or virtual walkthroughs to engage visitors and help them connect with your work.

Prioritize Simplicity

Avoid clutter and stick to clear navigation that makes your website easy to use.

Use High-Quality Images and Videos

Professional visuals help build trust and show the quality of your craftsmanship.

Clear Calls to Action

Guide users toward requesting a quote or scheduling a consultation with strong, visible CTAs.

SEO for Contractor Websites

Even the best website won’t succeed without traffic. That’s why search engine optimization is critical for contractors. A well-optimized site not only improves visibility but also supports consistent lead generation.

Strong keyword research helps you target the right audience: homeowners searching for contractors. Optimizing meta descriptions, titles, headers, and images ensures your site performs well in SERPs.

Adding regular content through blogging and content marketing also strengthens authority. Linking to related projects and services improves website performance. This makes it easier for search engines to connect you with the right audience.

Improving User Experience & Conversion Rates

Your website should do more than attract visitors; it should convert them into clients. Focusing on user experience is the key to making that happen. When your site is fast, clear, and engaging, visitors are far more likely to contact you for their home building project.

User Experience Focus Why It Matters for Contractors
Fast loading speeds A slow site frustrates visitors and makes them leave before seeing your work. Quick load times keep people engaged and build trust.
Mobile-friendly design Many clients search on their phones. A mobile-friendly site ensures your projects look great and your site is easy to use anywhere.
Clear navigation Simple menus and page layouts help visitors find services or contact details without confusion.
Strong CTAs Clear calls to action, like “Request a Quote,” guide visitors to take the next step and turn interest into leads.
High-quality visuals Professional photos and videos of your work show craftsmanship. This makes your services more appealing to potential clients.

Choosing the Right Contractor Website Services

Partnering with professionals ensures your site is built for results. A skilled marketing company or web design team will know how to blend visuals with SEO to help you stand out online.

The right provider should offer:

  • Tailored website design services that meet your unique goals.
  • Experience with builders’ website design to showcase projects effectively.
  • A focus on results, ensuring your site delivers long-term growth.

Measuring Website Performance & ROI

Once your site is live, tracking results is key. Use analytics to measure traffic, engagement, and leads generated. Look at metrics like bounce rates, conversion rates, and average time on site to see what’s working.

Monitoring website performance ensures you can make ongoing improvements. Over time, consistent updates keep your site competitive, improve lead generation, and maximize ROI.

Implementing Contractor Website Services for Growth

A professional contractor website is more than just a digital brochure. It’s a tool that brings in leads, builds trust, and helps you stand out from the competition. With the right home contractor and home builder website design, you can show off your work and get real results.

Salesforce is a cloud-based tool that helps businesses stay organized and take care of their customers. It’s one of the most popular types of CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software.

With Salesforce CRM, you can keep track of customer data, help your sales teams, and give better customer service. It’s great for small businesses and big ones too.

A lot of companies use Salesforce integration solutions because they make it easier to grow and improve the customer experience. In this blog, we’ll explain what Salesforce integration solutions are and how they work.

What Is a Salesforce Solution?

A Salesforce solution is a set of tools within the platform designed to help your business run more efficiently. It combines CRM, automation, and data analytics so you can better understand your customers and improve daily operations.

At its core, the Salesforce CRM solution helps you track customer details, sales, and support all in one place. It can also handle tasks automatically, like sending emails or sorting leads, so your team can save time. You also get reports and insights to see what’s working and what needs improvement.

Many businesses also use Salesforce in digital marketing. It helps them connect with the right people at the right time using customer information. With Salesforce clouds for marketing, sales, and service, you can create better customer experiences and grow your business faster.

These tools work together on a single platform, helping your team make smarter decisions and keeping data organized across departments.

Key Features and Tools in a Salesforce Solution

Tool What It Does
Sales Cloud Helps sales teams track leads, follow up with customers, and close more deals.
Service Cloud Makes it easier to handle customer questions and improve customer service.
Marketing Cloud Sends the right messages to the right people and improves the customer experience.
AppExchange & Custom Apps Let you find or build apps to customize the Salesforce platform to fit your business.
Integration Tools Uses Salesforce integration services to connect with other systems and improve data flow for a more unified platform.

These features make Salesforce a strong choice for businesses of all sizes, especially if you want a more connected and intelligent way to grow.

How Salesforce Solutions Help Businesses Grow

Salesforce solutions are built to help your business do more with less effort. Here’s how they make a difference:

  • Better Customer Relationships: With a strong Salesforce CRM solution, all your customer data is in one place. That means your team can give faster, more personal help, whether it’s answering a question or following up on a sale. This leads to a better customer experience and more loyal customers.
  • Smarter Sales and Service: Salesforce helps your sales teams and service reps work better together. With one platform, the team has access to the same information, making it easier to support customers and close sales.
  • Task Automation: Tired of doing the same thing over and over? Salesforce can handle tasks like sending follow-up emails or updating records automatically. This saves time and keeps your team focused on more important work.
  • Real-Time Data and Insights: Salesforce gives you live updates and reports so you can see what’s working and what’s not. This helps you make smart choices based on facts, not guesses.
  • Room to Grow: Whether you’re a startup or a growing company, Salesforce is made to grow with you. Thanks to Salesforce integration solutions and customizable tools, you can scale your system as your needs change. It’s a great fit for small businesses that want to grow without starting over.

A connected, cloud-based system helps your business move faster, serve customers better, and reach new goals.

Salesforce for Small vs. Large Businesses

Salesforce works well for all kinds of businesses, whether you’re small or large.

For Small Businesses

If your team is small, Salesforce helps you stay organized and grow without spending too much. It keeps all your customer data in one place so you can follow up with customers and give great customer service easily.

For Big Businesses

Bigger companies use Salesforce integration services to connect all their tools. They can use AI CRM to understand customer habits and manage many business processes at once.

Online Marketing: The Buying Process

When conducting online marketing, we often focus solely on the act of purchasing.  This strategy becomes problematic because buying is actually an entire process that a customer goes through psychologically before they decide to make a purchase. Business to Community has outlined 6 stages of the buying process and provides marketing strategies for each step of the customer buying process. Let’s review the common consumer shopping procedure on the internet and how you can optimize your marketing efforts.

Customer Buying Process & How to Use Online Marketing at Each Stage

Stage 1: Problem Recognition

Problem recognition is the beginning stage of the customer buying process. A customer identifies with a problem when they perceive their current reality as different from where they desire to be. Whether or not this problem exists, it provides an opportunity for online marketing professionals to show how their products or services can solve the perceived problem.

Shane Jones from Business to Community (B2C)  recommends that marketers “share facts and testimonials of what your product or service can provide. Ask questions to pull the potential customer into the buying process.” This type of information generates curiosity among customers to explore these solutions.

Online Marketing

Online Marketing for Problem Recognition

During the problem recognition stage, online marketing becomes a powerful tool for businesses to connect with potential customers. To effectively utilize online marketing strategies at this stage, consider these practical steps:

  • Keyword Research: Identify the keywords and phrases related to the problems your product or service solves. This will help your content appear in search results when potential customers are researching their issues.
  • Content Creation: Develop informative blog posts, articles, or videos that address common problems within your niche. Provide valuable insights, solutions, and real-life examples to capture the attention of individuals experiencing these issues.
  • Social Media Engagement: Utilize social media platforms to share your content and engage with your target audience. Pose questions and encourage discussions related to the problems your offerings can solve. Share customer success stories and testimonials to build credibility.
  • Email Marketing: Build an email list and send out relevant content and offers to subscribers. Tailor your emails to address specific pain points and showcase how your products or services can provide solutions.
  • Paid Advertising: Consider using pay-per-click (PPC) advertising on platforms like Google Ads or social media ads to target users actively searching for solutions to their problems.

By implementing these online marketing strategies during the problem recognition stage, you can effectively connect with potential customers and guide them toward considering your products or services as viable solutions to their needs.

Stage 2: Information Search

Now that a customer has identified their problem, they are ready to look for ways to solve it.  They begin to search for more information.  This is an opportunity for marketers to show that they are an industry leader and that their product/service is the solution. Create credibility and trust by “advertising partnerships and sponsors prominently on all web materials” B2C. Additionally, testimonials and success stories demonstrate your experience and customer satisfaction and make a lasting impression in a customer’s mind.

Online Marketing for Information Search

In the Information Search stage, where customers actively seek solutions to their problems, marketers can use the following strategies effectively:

  • Keyword Optimization: Target relevant keywords for higher search visibility.
  • Educational Content: Create informative content that addresses customer queries.
  • Partnerships and Sponsorships: Showcase these to boost credibility.
  • Customer Testimonials: Highlight success stories for trust-building.
  • Social Proof: Encourage reviews and ratings for authenticity.
  • Email Marketing: Share valuable insights and case studies.
  • Webinars and Workshops: Host engaging online events to establish expertise.

These strategies help position your brand as the solution provider and build trust with potential customers during their information search phase.

Stage 3: Evaluation of Alternatives

online marketingThe internet has made it easier for customers to do in-depth research and they do not want to purchase unless it is well thought out. They are going to look at your competition as well and compare their findings. B2C gives the example of how GEICO auto insurance uses this stage as an opportunity to keep their customers on their site by showing their competitors’ rates alongside theirs, even if the competition is cheaper, “This not only simplifies the process, it establishes a trusting customer relationship, especially during the evaluation of alternatives stage.”

Online Marketing for Evaluation of Alternatives

During the Evaluation of Alternatives stage, customers extensively research options and compare competitors. To excel in this stage:

  • Transparency: Provide detailed product/service information.
  • Competitor Comparison: Show competitor rates, fostering trust.
  • Reviews and Case Studies: Highlight positive feedback and success stories.
  • Instant Support: Offer live chat for quick queries.
  • Clear Distinctions: Communicate what makes you stand out.
  • Informative Content: Provide comparison guides and buying tips.

These strategies help you attract well-informed customers and increase the chances of them choosing your offering over competitors.

Stage 4: Purchase Decision

“At this point, the customer has explored multiple options, they understand pricing and payment options and they are deciding whether to move forward with the purchase or not” B2C. In a perfect world, customers would know what they wanted and would make the decision quickly and easily.  But even after careful research and a comparison of different products and brands the customer can still walk away.  It is then that the marketer can “remind customers of why they wanted to make the purchase the first time” B2C and reaffirm their product/service’s ability to solve the problem that was identified in Stage 1.

We may have all heard and said the famous, “Let me think about it and I will get back to you.” Instead of looking at this as a defeat, again, marketers can create an opportunity to use follow-up emails or phone calls to remind customers how their solutions can be of benefit to them.

Online Marketing for Purchase Decision

In the decision-making stage, customers are close to making a purchase decision but may hesitate. Marketers can:

  • Reiterate Value: Remind them why they wanted your product.
  • Address Concerns: Handle objections through follow-up emails or calls.
  • Create Urgency: Offer time-limited promotions.
  • Personalize: Tailor communication to their needs.
  • Showcase Success: Share testimonials to build confidence.

These strategies help customers overcome hesitations and make informed choices, increasing the chances of a successful sale.

Stage 5: Purchase

The customer has decided to purchase! The conversion is complete. Or is it? Again, the customer can still have an out. This is one of the most critical points in a marketing strategy. B2C highly suggests over-viewing your buying process, “Is it complicated? Are there too many steps? Is the load time too slow? Can a purchase be completed just as simply on a mobile device as on a desktop computer?” These are all important questions that if the answers are not optimal, can make or break the deal.

Online Marketing for Purchase

In the Purchase stage, the customer has decided to buy, marking a pivotal moment in the marketing process. However, it’s important to ensure the conversion is smooth and hassle-free:

  • Streamlined Process: Review your buying process for simplicity. Eliminate unnecessary steps and minimize complexity.
  • Mobile Optimization: Ensure that purchasing is as easy on a mobile device as it is on a desktop computer. Mobile-friendliness is crucial for today’s consumers.
  • Load Time: Speed matters. Optimize your website’s load time to prevent customers from abandoning their purchases due to slow performance.

By addressing these factors during the Purchase stage, you enhance the overall customer experience and reduce the risk of customers abandoning their transactions. A seamless and user-friendly process can make all the difference in closing the deal successfully.

Stage 6: Post-Purchase Evaluation

Congratulations! The purchase has been made and everyone is happy. The process then concludes with a post-purchase evaluation.  The customer will then decide if they like your product are not.  If they are dissatisfied, they may ask for a return. Do not take this as a failure, instead take this thought:

“Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning.”- Bill Gates

Use this as an opportunity to learn how to make your brand more effective. Asking for reviews and sending follow-up emails or special promotions are ways to create a positive relationship by continuing to establish your brand’s trust and increasing the likelihood of a returning customer.

These six steps are geared to help marketers better understand the whole process behind a purchase. Understanding these steps and implementing a strategy can increase customer conversions and lead to lasting satisfied customers.

Online Marketing for Post-Purchase Evaluation

In the Post-Purchase Evaluation stage, the customer has completed their purchase, and it’s time to assess their satisfaction. Here’s how to navigate this critical phase:

  • Customer Feedback: Encourage customers to provide feedback and reviews. This insight is invaluable for improving your product or service.
  • Returns and Dissatisfaction: Understand that dissatisfaction can lead to returns. Use these instances as opportunities for improvement rather than failures.
  • Customer Engagement: Maintain a positive relationship by sending follow-up emails and special promotions. This shows your commitment to customer satisfaction and can encourage repeat business.

By following these steps, you demonstrate your dedication to improvement and customer-centricity. This holistic approach helps in creating satisfied customers and building trust in your brand.

Why You Need a Shopping Experience Expert

If your business caters to online shoppers, having an expert to enhance the customer buying journey is crucial. This is why web design plays an important role in how consumers shop online. If a user struggles to make an online purchase because of a technical issue, the problem stems from your web page, not your product.

How to Find a Good Web Designer

Searching the internet for a “good web designer” inevitably brings thousands of search results. From local web designers to freelance agencies, actually finding a good web designer starts with understanding what you’re looking for. Start with a list of web designers and developers, then analyze them based on the following considerations.

  1. Set a budget
  2. Decide on what type of web designer you want
  3. Take a look at their portfolio
  4. Hear from past clients
  5. Browse their other services
  6. Request references related to your industry
  7. Ask questions about their process

1) Set a budget

In the world of web design, there’s not necessarily a standard price for what a website project costs. When looking for a website designer, setting a budget or having an idea of your max limit is your first step for determining where you might go for service. Not only will it help you filter through the web design companies available, but will also help you gauge your expectations when comparing.

2) Decide on what type of web designer you want

Web design and development is a very popular industry, and there are a number of different types of ways to receive a new website for your business. Whether it’s a freelancer, a design agency, or a full-service agency that provides additional digital marketing services, there are pros and cons to each type.

3) Take a look at their portfolio

Once you’ve narrowed down your options, it’s crucial to look at past projects a potential web designer has completed. Are they fully functional? Do each of their pages load quickly? Is the content easy to read and understand? Are the photos formatted correctly? What type of animation features do they have integrated?

Past design work not only shows you exactly what a website builder has to offer but also can give you inspiration for what your new website could look like.

4) Hear from past clients

On your search to find a good web designer, client testimonials are another way to help you see what a particular company is known for. Companies that have a lot of positive reviews are usually known for providing great service to their clients, and in turn, can be trusted to provide that for your project.

5) Browse their other services

What other digital marketing, graphic design, or development services does a potential designer provide? Even though you may not be interested in these additional services, finding a web design company who has expertise in a range of fields can be invaluable for your website. Plus, you may even find that you need one of those extra services, especially if they are bundled with the web design project.

6) Request references related to your industry

While website design can be a pretty straightforward process, your industry is unique. It’s important to hire a web designer that has experience with your particular business to ensure you are one step ahead of your competition. As you’re making a decision about a web design company, don’t be afraid to request references of projects similar to yours.

7) Ask questions about their process

Transparency is one of the most important factors of web design. Before you kick off a new project, ask a potential website developer exactly what goes into designing a website. The best agencies will be more than willing to walk you through the process and help you set your expectations for the duration of the project.

Having an outdated or slow-loading website can create negative user experiences if they aren’t resolved as needed. In the digital marketing world, it’s important to keep up with website design trends by looking at your competitors and social media. Here are three signs that your website might be in need of a new design:

Leads Are Dropping or Falling Flat

Unfortunately, if your site isn’t up to date with the current trends, it’s at risk of losing potential leads. If you’re noticing fewer website visitors at an alarming rate, it might be that your site’s graphic design needs refreshing. Working with a website designer will help you to solve problems like unwanted horizontal scrolling, or set dark mode optimization.

Pages Are Loading Too Slowly

No one wants to wait more than a few seconds for a page to load. If the web pages your customers are looking for are loading too slowly, they’ll move onto a competitor’s website for what they need. Certain design elements such as large hero images can affect your site’s loading speed–which isn’t good for your customers or search engine crawlers.

Current Web Design is Outdated

It takes 50 milliseconds for users to form an opinion about your website. That first impression won’t go well if the site’s design is outdated and difficult to navigate. Your website might be considered out of date if it uses plain black and white text has too much white space or lacks carefully matched color palettes. Just adding some attractive color schemes and drop shadows where they’re needed should give your website a bit more of a fresh look.

What’s Wrong with Your Website?

If your website proves to be too difficult to navigate or understand, potential customers will go back to Google to find an alternative. That means lost revenue for you. Don’t let that happen! Identify and fix these all-too-common website errors:

  1. Barriers to usability
  2. Unhelpful website name
  3. Info-dumping
  4. No calls to action

1) Barriers to Usability

This rather broad issue can take several different forms. However, it usually manifests itself as one of two problems. First, your website may simply be confusing to navigate. Even if your links all lead to the right places, improperly labeling or placing those links can confuse a visitor. And if they can’t find what they’re looking for quickly, chances are they’ll just leave.
Second, your website may not work well on a mobile device. This is a particularly significant problem since so many people surf the internet on their phones or tablets now. Significant formatting errors or slower loading speeds on mobile will, once again, lead customers to search elsewhere. After all, a competitor that knows to build a quality mobile site knows what they’re doing. Don’t inadvertently promote your competition this way!

2) Unhelpful Website Name

Your website’s name should clearly indicate the name of your business, your service area, and what you offer. Your URL should also reflect the website title without exactly replicating it. If either one is too generic or misrepresents your business’s offerings, it’s time for a change.

3) Info-Dumping

Have you ever watched a movie or read a book where the characters drone on and on about a particular topic that’s only tangentially relevant at the moment? That’s called exposition, and while every well-written story needs some of it, lumping it all together is sometimes called “info-dumping” and regarded as a mark of lazy writing.
Professional websites can be guilty of this same mistake. No one wants to be assaulted by a wall of brightly colored images, text, or videos the second they click on your website. Spread the information out on your website and show customers what they need to know when they need to know it. Someone interested in your car repair services, for instance, doesn’t necessarily need or want to read the colors of paint you offer for aesthetics. Sort your topics accordingly and let the customers look for what they want.

4) No Calls to Action

Finally, visitors may not convert into customers simply because they aren’t sure how. Without a clearly defined call to action, your website becomes just a colorful online flyer. Encourage customers to contact you or buy from you and prominently display links showing where to do so. Make the whole process as streamlined as possible to encourage people to stick with you.

Optimizing Your Web Presence

Proper website design and information distribution can mean the difference between a converted customer and a lost opportunity. If your website performance is lackluster, it may be time for a change.

Your Website is Severely Outdated

Your web presence doesn’t have to look like it stepped out of the 90s to look old. As coding continues to improve, website designers have created some truly marvelous effects while also boosting the site’s functionality. Can your website compete with that? You obviously don’t have to create the world’s best website, but if you want to stand out, you have to present yourself like your competitors do.

Your Website Looks Unappealing

Few things turn potential customers off faster than an ugly website. You could have the most modern coding in the world, but unless it’s accompanied by quality graphic design, it won’t help you. The same goes for websites that are difficult to navigate. Clients may visit a competitor’s website instead simply to find a company that looks more put-together. Don’t let that happen! Have an expert web designer give your website a facelift.

Your Website Doesn’t Get Enough Traffic

This problem could be a consequence of the two above. Alternatively, maybe you simply aren’t promoting your website enough. Customers will buy from you on your site–don’t ignore it! Make sure to display your website prominently in your marketing campaigns, encourage your clients to visit, and make sure their visit is pleasant.

Update Your Online Presence

Digital marketing involves far more than keyword research and eye-catching calls to action. Without a well-designed, functional website to back your business up, you’ll struggle to stay afloat.
Give yourself the help you need and contact our team of expert web developers today.

We all have triggers that prompt us to walk away from a situation as quickly as possible. Some might rush to leave a dirty-looking restaurant that prompts doubts about the safety of the food. Likewise, whether we realize it or not, websites may trigger the same response from a potential customer. Is your website giving off the same impression as a dirty restaurant and scaring clients away?

Does Your Website Have These Problems?

Certain design choices or missing features can lead potential customers to click off your website. Of course, this results in fewer sales and lower online visibility for you. How can you combat this problem? Perform a website audit and see if any of these issues stand out to you:

  1. Long loading times
  2. Required registration
  3. Difficulty navigating

1) Long Loading Times

Plenty of customers can recall a time that a website they clicked on took way too long to load, while other websites popped up nearly immediately. This scenario turns people off. If the problem demonstrably lies with your website and not with the customer’s internet, they’ll likely lose patience and move on to a competing website that gives them what they want faster. How long does your website take to load? How many sales have you potentially lost to lag?

Pro Tip: Overloading your website with images or videos can greatly increase your loading time and make customers lose patience. Keep your design simple and easy to navigate.

2) Required Registration

Certain websites require registration before their full capabilities are unlocked. For websites like social media platforms or shopping centers, this is understandable. However, your website may not qualify. No customer wants to hand over their email or go through the trouble of making an account just to read an article, for example. Consider if your services really require registration.

3) Difficulty Navigating

Finally, your website may simply be confusing! A difficult-to-navigate website could have broken links, 404 errors galore, links that send you to the wrong page, or a menu that makes your head spin. Customers have little patience for websites like this. If someone finds themselves lost on your website or constantly hitting brick walls, they’ll go somewhere else in a heartbeat. Don’t make your website an unsolvable maze!

Improve Your Website

Consumers often Google a business before visiting in person. As their first impression of your establishment, your website should knock it out of the park. Keep your online presence polished and attractive to any potential clients.

Increasing your sales and online visibility depends on how much work you put into your website. And there’s no single most important thing to focus on! Even a website that ranks highest for your chosen keywords could drive customers away if it looks outdated or clunky. How can you strike the balance and produce an excellent website that increases your sales?
Several key principles will help you keep your website ranking high and your customers interested in what you have to offer. None of these are necessarily more important than the other–without putting significant effort into all of them, you can’t expect to see results. Let’s take a closer look at several of the more important concepts to keep in mind as you optimize your website.

Keep Providing Fresh Content!

The saying “Content is king” still rings true. However, a more accurate saying might be “Fresh content is king.” Your readers will notice if you keep recycling the same blog posts and points over and over again. There’s nothing wrong with rewriting or resharing older pieces if you have new information or updates to add. However, putting minimal effort into your sharing or rewriting efforts just comes across as lazy to your audience. And your audience will notice! Give them new or entirely updated content instead of expecting them to continue clicking on the same article time and time again.

Pro Tip: Browse your competitor’s websites and research influencers in your industry for content ideas. There’s always something new to try.

Pay Attention to Technical SEO

Let’s say you searched for tickets to a new movie and clicked on a particular theater’s website. The website loads…and continues to load for several seconds. You have a perfect internet signal and no other windows you have open are stalling similarly, so this isn’t a problem on your end. Chances are, you’ll get impatient and try another theater’s website to buy tickets. The first theater has just lost a potential sale from you because they failed in technical SEO.
Of course, loading time is the most obvious technical SEO failure, but not the only one. What if the theater’s purchase page is broken or unsecured, putting your payment at risk or double-charging you? What if you’re buying tickets on a mobile device and the website doesn’t fit on your screen? Whether you’re selling movie tickets or just advertising through your website, you simply cannot afford poor website design or programming. Consumers will notice and go to your competition for a better online experience.

Target Local SEO

If your business has a physical location, you should focus on targeting potential customers within a reasonable distance. Continuing our movie theater example, no one travels out of state only for a particular theater when there are perfectly good theaters closer to them. Show your customers why you’re the best in your industry and in their area. Your appeal should be based as much on your physical location as your prices, services, or product line.

Competing businesses adopt different tactics to outperform others in their industry. Most companies stick to standard and acceptable strategies like SEO, clever marketing campaigns, engaging content, and more. But a few will adopt more hostile techniques. By its nature, negative SEO can be difficult to counter without professional help. But the first step toward improving your situation is determining the type of negative SEO that’s affecting you and taking steps to keep things from getting worse. Here is a brief overview of negative SEO to get you on the road to recovery.

What is Negative SEO?

Negative SEO can take multiple forms. Sometimes poor rankings are the result of a mistake on your website’s part: poor loading times, non-optimized images, no attention to keywords, or other errors. But negative SEO usually refers to a malicious attack by an outside source. Desperate competitors might resort to any manner of tactics to bring your website down. Common examples could include:

  • Link farms: building links to spam websites with questionable anchor text to invite a ban from Google
  • Stealing and reposting content
  • Forced crawling and server overload
  • Hacking your website’s code
  • Redirecting your website URL to a malicious page
  • Adding a “disallow” rule to your web code, telling Google to ignore your website

Pro Tip: Before you assume your website is under attack by spammers or competitors, make sure your poor SEO results aren’t due to a mistake you’re making. It might be easier to solve than you think.

Prevent Negative SEO Attacks on Your Website

Unfortunately, there’s no exact method to prevent negative SEO attacks. There are no programs or website plugins to install to block people from adopting one or more of these methods against you. However, there are measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of you becoming a target and to reduce the damage if it does happen.
First of all, you can set up alerts through your website and Google to tell you if any links are leading to your website via questionable keywords. If you get an alert, all you have to do is find the page the link is directing to, remove it, disavow the link, and tighten your security so the hacker can’t repeat their attack. This allows you to respond quickly to any problems.
Second, if you identify a case of content theft or suspect one, confront the owner of the offending website and ask them to remove the content. If they refuse, report them to Google and escalate further if necessary. Don’t let them set a precedent of stealing from you.
Third, regularly run audits of your website to look for any suspicious activity, broken links, or altered code. Fix any identified problems as quickly as possible to get back to ranking on Google.
Finally, in addition to other commonsense measures, don’t go out of your way to make enemies online. Obviously, not every interaction you will have with someone else will be positive. However, it’s still important to keep your dealings with others professional and not give them any reason to retaliate.

How to Undo Negative SEO

If you’ve become the victim of a negative SEO attack, there are several things you should do right away:

  • Find and disavow any malevolent backlinks
  • Audit your website for altered code and fix anything you find
  • Contact websites that stole your content and tell them to take it down
  • Contact your hosting company for help with an overloaded server

Whatever tactic you choose to defend yourself, do it quickly! The longer negative SEO has to damage your website and rankings, the more damage will be done.

Don’t Let Competitors Undo Your Hard Work

You can’t always predict if a competitor will resort to negative SEO and sabotage to bring your website down. But don’t let their unscrupulous measures invalidate all the work you put into boosting your site. Use your own SEO skills and the help of SEO professionals to stop things from getting worse and prevent future attacks.
